Long Distance Parent-Child Relationships in the Internet Age
Parenting is tough, especially if you are often apart from your kids. Learn some useful suggestions for long distance parenting, and how virtual visitation is playing into more custody arrangements.
May 21, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Long distance parenting is a unique challenge. But, even if you live miles away from your kids, there are many ways you can continue to build your familial bond. Thanks to smart parenting and the latest technological marvels, distance does not have to be the wedge in parent-child relationships that it once was.
Proven Tips
There are a number of ways to remain an important part of your child's life, even if you must spend a great deal of time apart. For one thing, it is important for kids to know you are thinking about them, and not just at regularly scheduled phone call times. Try sending postcards every week or two, and vary your calling schedule. In addition, it can be imperative to have common experiences that keep you connected in long distance conversations. Take time to follow your child's favorite sports team, television series or other passion.
When you do get to visit in person, meet your child's friends and their families, volunteer at your child's school or in their extracurricular activities, and spend time following the interests your child is developing.
Virtual Visitation
Technology opens up a whole new world of options as well. Using live videoconferencing services such as Skype allows you and your child to have more regular face-to-face communication experiences. Even from several states away, you can set up a night or two a week to read bedtime stories together. Other forms of electronic communications, such as email or texting, can also be a good way to keep in touch with today's plugged-in youth.
While parents have been using technology to converse with far-off kids for some time, only relatively recently has this innovation been embraced by many family law courts. A number of states have enacted laws aimed specifically at facilitating virtual visitation in child custody cases. Of course, nothing substitutes for in person contact with your child, but technology can make living far away just a little bit easier.
